We have some of the most forward-thinking, award-winning NHS communicators speaking about their work to improve the way their organisation communicates and engages with staff and other internal stakeholders.

Antony Tiernan (@AntonyTiernan), director of engagement and communications working with NHS England, will chair the event. Antony has been leading communications on the NHS’s high-profile 70th birthday in 2018. He has an illustrious career in health communications and in 2014 set up @NHScommsorg to support NHS and other health communicators to share best practice.

Alex Bass (@AlexBass75) is the head of internal communications and Stuart Crichton (@stucri) is assistant director of operational service improvement with the London Ambulance Service (@Ldn_Ambulance).

They will talk about the development of the service’s closed Facebook group, which was set up in 2013 and recently won an Institute of Internal Communications Award for the best use of internal social media.

Alex and Stuart will focus on the challenges and successes of the group, how it has changed since it was launched and the vital role that peer moderators now play in supporting it round the clock.

Kate Jarman, director of corporate affairs and Jacob Prichard, communications manager from Milton Keynes University Hospitals NHS Trust (@MKHospital) will be talking about their award-winning Event in the Tent – the #TeamMKUH flagship staff engagement event.

The Event in the Tent utilises the power of brilliant internal communications to inspire and motivate a workforce of almost 4,000 multi-professional staff. It creates an open, honest and collaborative organisational space where new ideas are dreamt up, shared and support gained from management to bring them to life.

Kate (@KateBurkeNHS) and Jacob (@Jacob_Prichard) will talk about what makes the Event in the Tent a success and how it has changed the way @MKHospital approaches staff engagement.

Jude Tipper is the head of marketing, communications and engagement at South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust(@allofusinmind).

Jude (@JudeTipper) will talk about how a strategic approach to internal communications has achieved outstanding results. Following a full review of existing channels, internal communications were reinvigorated. Their staff wellbeing campaign #allofus has not only led to staff taking up wellbeing support but also meant the Trust hit targets that carried hefty financial incentives.

The Trust’s communications to 4,500 staff across a range of locations helps bridge the gap from Board to ward and ensures staff really understand where they fit in the Trust’s vision and values. And they reveal there’s still a role to play for the good old toilet door poster!

Rebecca Oakley is head of organisational effectiveness at Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust (@DCHStrust), rated as the top community Trust for engagement in the 2016 NHS staff survey. Clair Sanders is the organisational effectiveness lead at both DCHS Trust and Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (@derbyshcft).

Rebecca (@RebeccaNHSOD) and Clair (@ClairSNHS) will talk about how they used an ‘old school’ approach as part of the Trust communications and engagement strategy to boost morale and improve engagement with the 4,500 employees the Trust employs over 205 sites. The re-launch of a staff magazine was about ‘bringing sexy back’ to this traditional form of print communications.

Rebecca and Clair will focus on why and how they ensured this was a publication with a difference, the challenges to maintain editorial control and how a TV celebrity exclusive saw circulation soar!
